All it takes to install the NearEDGE software is to start the installer, go to a Web page with a mobile device and point the camera at the display. No question asked.
Performing the required steps to deploy new remote Endpoints can be a daunting task. If doing this is under pressure to recover after a security breach is even more scary. All this coupled with the current skilled staff shortage is all it takes to disrupt a well-planned project.
Most of the steps needed to deploy Endpoints, including installing the operating system using NearEDGE are performed from a central dashboard. All it remains is the installation of the NearEDGE components. This requires no skill other than booting the machine via a USB Stick and capture QR codes using a Webapp on a mobile device. Everything is taken out of the hands of the person on site.

Operating computers and workloads on a customer's premise has always been a nightmare because of the inefficiencies of relying on remote hands. The same is true when using co-location facilities, at corporate sites / branches where no technical staff is present, or just simply when the computers are out in the wild (such as in kiosks, roadside billboards, etc.). Timeliness and availability of those human resources can not be guaranteed, which causes delays in trouble resolution, increase time required to repair (MTTR) and inevitably result in higher operating cost.
Using a design approach that provides fallback mechanisms and fault tolerant operations, the NearEDGE offering is highly resilient. Once installed, except for actual physical failures, nobody will need to attend the Endpoints until it is time to retire them.

Many of the maintenance or installation procedures typically require some coordination with some other persons, including 3rd parties, or end-users. Such interactions are inefficient and reduce productivity. It is highly desirable that once a task is started, it is completed in due time and without the disruptions that come with having to instruct people over the phone or via an in-line meeting.
The main goal of NearEDGE's service is to provide the ability to perform every procedure performed with remote Endpoints without requiring the help or cooperation of anybody. Every single step of the complete life-cycle of an operating system, including fresh installation, recovery, and upgrade, can be initiated and controlled from an IT central site.
Using HTTP only traffic eliminates most firewall concerns. The endpoints will be able to make contact with the control center with no special rules in firewalls.
Remote Endpoints are bound to operate in a vastly heterogeneous environment. This is true for pure Edge computing deployments but also for legacy remote use cases. On top of lack of LAN resources, the networking considerations are often taking long to resolve. Firewall traversal, proxy configuration and other IP address misconfiguration are all causing long delay to deploy a solution. It is not rare to see projects being delayed by weeks, if not months.
The solution architected by NearEDGE eliminated most of the friction related to networking in a heterogeneous environment. We only use outbound HTTP traffic, which provides with the following benefits:
- Easiest possible firewall traversal. If accessing the Web is possible, then the NearEDGE solution is covered
- Support for Web proxy, including traffic inspection and control by the customer
- White listing of few URLs
- Operates even if the outbound traffic is only enabled on-demand
- State-of-the art encryption and secure session establishment
On top of only using HTTP, NearEDGE natively support IPv4, dual stack and IPv6 only networking.
